Section 8 HousingWhat is Section 8? Section 8 is a federal rental assistance program also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program. It is federally funded and operated by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). Section 8 provides rental assistance to help low-income families, seniors and the disabled pay for decent, safe housing. What are Section 8 tenant-based vouchers? Section 8 tenant-based vouchers are rent subsidies given to low-income families who live in rental housing that is not public housing or subsidized housing. Families pay about 30% of their income for rent, and Section 8 pays the rest. Families with Section 8 tenant-based vouchers choose their own housing. They may choose any rental unit they want, as long as the rent is reasonable, the size is appropriate for the family, and the unit is safe and clean. If the family moves, they can use their voucher elsewhere. How do I apply? Our waiting list is currently closed, and we only accept applications when the list is open. At this time, we have no estimated date when we will reopen the list. However, when the waiting list reopens, you will need to fill out a short preliminary application in order to be placed on the list. This application may be picked up at our office, or you may call the office at 845-485-3656 and request that we mail one to you. Applicants are placed on our waiting list by date and time order, and according to whether or not they are residents of the Town of Poughkeepsie. Town residents receive preference over non-residents, which means that they move ahead of non-residents on the list. When your name is selected from the waiting list, you will be notified by mail, and you will be given an appointment for an interview. You will need to bring certain documents with you for this interview, such as proof of identity and proof of residence. Am I eligible for Section 8? Families applying for Section 8 must have at least one family member who is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. You may be denied a Section 8 voucher if you have been involved in criminal drug activity, violent behavior, or housing fraud. Family income cannot be greater than 50% of the area median income. You do not have to be a resident of the Town. However, Town residents will receive a preference over non-residents. Would you like to become a Section 8 landlord? We are always looking for Section 8 landlords! If you have a rental unit that you would like to have listed with us for rental to a Section 8 tenant, we would like to hear from you. We would be happy to explain to you the benefits of being a Section 8 landlord. For more information on the Section 8 program or becoming a Section 8 landlord: Please contact:
