How to Designate a Property


The designation process is described in the Town Code. (Any property owner may make a request for historic designation).

  1. Complete the Town Poughkeepsie Historic Designation Application.
  2. Notice of consideration will be mailed to the property owner(s), including any neighboring property owners in the vicinity.
  3. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will meet to discuss the application for the specific property designation.  Subject property owner(s) and owners within 300 feet will be invited to attend.
  4. After review, the Commission will submit its recommendation to the Town Board.
  5. The Town Board will announce a public hearing to review and vote on the application.
  6. The Town Board will vote on the application; the decision will be filed and the subject property owner(s) notified.
