-Town Advises Customers Of Increased Sodium Levels in Drinking Water

In an effort to proactively notify customers on severely restricted sodium diets, Poughkeepsie Joint Water Board is advising customers that the current drought, which has resulted in reduced Hudson River flows, has caused increased sodium levels in the treated water supply. Current sodium levels have increased to greater than 50mg/L. Additional notification will be released should the sodium level exceed 100 mg/L. Customers with health conditions that necessitate reduced sodium intake are advised to seek out alternative low sodium bottled water for their drinking until further notice.

The NYSDOH health effect language for sodium is as follows:

“Water containing more than 20 mg/L of sodium should not be used for drinking by people on severely restricted sodium diets. Water containing more than 270 mg/L of sodium should not be used for drinking by people on moderately restricted sodium diets.”

For most customers, this small increase in sodium levels will not have an adverse effect and the water is safe to drink. If you have concerns regarding your level of sodium intake, please contact your healthcare provider.

Further notification will be provided when the conditions change. If you have questions regarding sampling results, please call Poughkeepsie Joint Water Board’s Environmental Lab Director, Dottie DiNobile at (845) 451-4173 ext. 2012 or James teed, Senior Engineer, Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health at (845) 486-3404.

For further questions, please contact the Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor, Jon J. Baisley, at 845-485-3607 or by email at
